Description
Osha (Ligusticum porteri) is a perennial herb native to North American, that’s part of the carrot and parsley family. It’s often found on the edges of forests and in high mountain parts of the Rocky Mountains and Mexico. Also known as “Bear Root” osha has an important place with Native American culture.
“Bear root” earned its name from the bears that seek it out in the spring. Bears will dig up the root, rub it over their fur (to keep insects away) and consume some to stimulate their digestive track after a long, sluggish winter of hibernation.
As a medicinal herb for humans, osha contains a wide variety of health benefits, most for the respiratory tract. The root is considered an immune booster and aid for coughs, pneumonia, colds, bronchitis, and the flu.
