Osha (Ligusticum porteri) is a perennial herb native to North American, that’s part of the carrot and parsley family. It’s often found on the edges of forests and in high mountain parts of the Rocky Mountains and Mexico. Also known as “bear root” osha has an important place with Native American culture.
Osha root is used in many indigenous ceremonies for purification and protection. The potent aromic smell is hypnotizing and calming in itself, so it’s easy to understand it’s importance as a traditional “medicine”. In Mexico its eaten as a food incorporated into tacos and other various cuisines.
As a medicinal herb, osha contains a wide variety of health benefits, most for the respiratory tract. The root is considered an immune booster and aid for coughs, pneumonia, colds, bronchitis, and the flu.
