Many cultures around the world have used pine resin in the same way a tree does, to heal wounds.
Pine resin is essentially a band-aid for a tree because it acts as an antimicrobial to help seal wounds and prevent infection.
Pine trees produce resin in the outer bark when they are injured, such as when a branch breaks, is eaten by wildlife, or is damaged by insects. The resin is rich in antimicrobial essential oils that give it a conifer scent and help flush out organisms that might try to enter the wound. The resin can also trap organisms in the seal and overcome them with its toxicity.
By harnessing this power, we are able to make topical ointments that can be used on minor skin abrasions, deep wounds, cuts, burns, chapped lips, sore muscles, as a drawing salve.
